I have worked as an education journalist for more than twenty years, first as a senior editor on The Times Educational Supplement, then as that paper's US correspondent, based in New York, and then - while bringing up my children - as a freelance writer and columnist for a variety of national newspapers and magazines. I visit nurseries, schools, universities and colleges up and down the country, and in many countries abroad, and believe that this sustained experience of the day-to-day realities of education, along with my experience as a parent of both private and state schools, helps to inform everything I write.
